Lofoten Foraging Safari
Discover the taste of the Arctic!
Almost everyone knows Lofoten as a breathtaking postcard motif. But we think this landscape is way too precious to just look at from a parking lot or through a camera lens. Mostly, visitors stand at the exact same crowded spots, taking the exact same photos as everyone else. We created this tour to give you a real, tangible connection to nature.
The Arctic tundra might seem barren at times, making you wonder what people actually live on here – just fish and sheep? The truth is, the landscape is full of free, wild ingredients that most of us simply walk right past. Join us on a relaxed, hands-on "Sanketur" (Norwegian for foraging trip). We slow down, take a closer look, and discover what is otherwise overlooked or seems insignificant: not everything is just a weed! Learn about the traditional berry harvest for the long winter and experience the wilderness up close, just as the locals have done here for thousands of years.
Not just blueberries: You might even find some of the lesser-known herbs and berries back home later on – perhaps you'll have developed a taste for them!
What to expect
Together, we roam the untouched Arctic tundra in search of nature's hidden treasures. The group size is deliberately kept small (maximum 8 people, usually 3-6).
- 🫐 Picking & tasting berries: Depending on the season, we pick fresh, sweet blueberries and bog bilberries, tart crowberries, and – with a bit of luck – the Arctic cloudberry (the "Gold of the North"), as well as many other species.
- 🥾 The tour is also a beautiful, easy hike through flat terrain – right between the open ocean, imposing peaks, and crystal-clear lakes, far away from crowded paths.
What you will learn on this tour
- 🌿 Safe foraging: We will show you exactly how to distinguish edible herbs and berries from others, so you can forage and taste with peace of mind.
- 📖 Fascinating history & tradition: Learn how people here have utilized the harsh nature for millennia (and still do today), what ingredients they gathered, and how they processed them to survive the long, dark Arctic winters.
- ⛰️ Nature & Geology: Learn a bit about the Arctic fauna, keep an eye out for moose (two moose families regularly roam the area), and casually learn how the massive mountains of Lofoten were formed.
